"Cookbooks do tend to breed more cookbooks..." Ain't that the truth. I am out of shelving.

You'll have to show me how to do the cool Moebius thing. Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out which dumbheaded knitting project to bring with me to St. Louis. I can't bring the Very Urgent Difficult One, because my knitting instructor is tardy in answering a pretty key question, so I'm stuck.

Re (1), geez, you don't think I own all the books on my shelf (now up to 6 pages, I think), do you? Heck, I never ever buy books (except for nonfiction)--that's why God invented libraries. Fortunately, I hang on to the little book lists that I carry around in my purse so that I'll have them in case I happen to be at the library, so I can glance at those and remember books I've loved in recent years. That's what most of my Shelfari shelf consists of. Otherwise, the only books on my shelves would be Chomsky (on linguistics, not politics, I hasten to add), knitting, and information architecture. And a bunch of Baudelaire and Verlaine that I've kept since college. And seriously, not much else.

As to (2) and (3), well, you say those like they're bad things.

Thanks for the tip on shelfari. I've already picked up lots of ideas for books to add to my lengthy "to read" list. One minor issue I'm running into is that the books I own -- many of which I've hung on to for years -- don't necessarily parallel the types of books I read these days because I rely so much on the public library. But if I started adding in books I love but don't own, that would: (1) be cheating; (2) be even more of a time suck; and (3) probably generate so many connections to other books I should read that my head would explode.

hey Marcia, want to be my shelfari friend too?

Hello Shelfari friend.

I have a bunch of philosophy on my shelf—French philosophy at that. ;) But you can call it lit crit if you must. After all, I was an English major (but also a philosophy major), and I do like analyzing books. I'm not sure that I really know how to do that any more, alas. Not that it matters, since I seem to be unable to read anything other than student papers these days.

The Knitting Answer Book sounds like something I need. I always end up starting over because of my ineptitude at recovering from mistakes.

There's a book called The Knitting Answer Book that is highly recommended by Those Who Know Such Things. It's full of advice on fixing mistakes, I guess. I should probably buy it myself, since I always seem to have to rip projects out and start over three times before I finally get them right.

I just found you on Shelfari and requested your friendship. Even if you do have a bunch of lit crit on your shelf. :)

Shelfari. Another freakin' time suck! Thanks, Amy.

Congratulations on your knitting triumph. I have had a simple knitting project go horribly awry and must figure out how to fix it. Fortunately, I am getting better at unraveling; unfortunately, this is because I often have things go horribly awry (even though I've only taken on very simple knitting projects).

I think Bela would like a knitted cat bed. Maybe I'll try one of those after I finish my Christmas gift projects.
